SUSTech holds a Variety Show Themed “Welcome New Students, Celebrate China’s National Day”

On the evening of 24 September, 2016, the SUSTech variety show themed “Welcome New Students, Celebrate China’s National Day” was held, which was sponsored by Office of Student Affairs and organized by the Student Union. Vice President Wu Chuanyue and Chief Operating Officer Lu Chun watched the show with the faculty.

The show was unveiled with sounding drumbeats and melodious music of Guzheng and Erhu (traditional Chinese music instruments) from traditional instruments orchestra of Shuren College.

The show consisted of all kinds of performances, and incorporated various cultures. The traditional Chinese dance with girls in long sleeves captured the eyes of the audience; the rap music skillfully combined Chinese elements; the song Cambodia Welcomes You by students from Cambodia was cheerful, light-hearted and passionate; the Latin dance was characteristic and impressive; the Chinese martial arts show fully demonstrated the profound and splendid Chinese culture...All of these wonderful performances aroused hearty rounds of applause from the audience.

Particularly, the dynamic rhythms of the hip-hop dance Mad Kids lifted the spirits of the audience. The short sketch that vividly reflected the life of 2016 freshmen pushed the show to a new high.

The show came to an end with a song performed by 32 freshmen from 20 classes.

After the show, a reporter from Students Journalism Club interviewed some students and teachers. Gan Nan, a freshman from Shuli College was very excited: “The versatile students are awesome! I can feel that SUSTech teems with talents!” Huang Jincai, an international student from Cambodia, said: “We practiced very hard for the show, and we made it. The enthusiasm from students made me feel at home.”

Vice President Wu Chuanyue told the reporter rejoicingly: “SUSTech has entered a stage of rapid development. The 2016 freshmen are excellent. I welcome them and hope that they will become outstanding talents.” Professor Xia Zhihong from the Department of Mathematics said in high spirits: “I am so happy to see that these students have this kind of state of mind. They gave me lots of surprises. Actually I was astonished that they could offer us performances of such high quality in such a short time!”
